On June 9, 2017, Farhat from CCMW – Ottawa and three other members of MOMS group met with Mr. Howard Sapers, the Independent Advisor on Corrections Reform to the Ontario Government. They expressed their support for his recent report and recommendations for reform of Ontario’s Correctional System, and pledged their vigilance and advocacy for basic human rights for the vulnerable caught in the justice system. They pointed out that the new anti-racism bill passed by the Ontario government must be applied in the policy and programs in the prisons where there is a significant and growing Muslim population. Mr. Sapers took keen notes of their comments and welcomed any information that may be helpful in his next report.
On June 21, Farhat and members of MOMS also met with Ontario Minister Marie France-Lalonde to discuss the implementation of Task Force recommendations for Ottawa prisons, and improvements to the justice system in Ontario.
