Islamic History Month Celebration at Oshawa Library

Durham Chapter hosted an Islamic History Month in association with Oshawa Public Library at Northview Branch.  Library staff started with a land acknowledgment and Iman Shakir from Oshawa Mosque did a prayer.  It was an amazing event with Proclamations presented by: Chair John Henry of the Region of Durham, Mayor Dan Carter of Oshawa, Tito Dante-Marimpietri, City Councillor for Oshawa, Deputy Mayor Elizabeth Roy for Whitby, Sterling Lee, Regional Council for Ajax, and Shaheen Butt City Councillor for Pickering.  Thank you to the four towns of Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, and Oshawa and the Region of Durham for recognizing the growing Muslim population by proclaiming October as Islamic History Month.

Maryum, Mumtaz, Ruby, and Nishath served the samosas, cookies, and cakes for the event. The library provided beverages and books related to the theme. The attendees had many activities to choose from: Uzma and Haniya applied henna, Sheeba and Shasmeen had two crafts for children, and Ali and Moosa helped at the colouring table.  .  Executive Director, Nuzhat presented certificates to Sarina, Hassnain, Zainab, Nuriyah, Omar, Hannah, Waiz, Zahraa, Naeema, and Ayana for preparing the informative displays.  We are thankful that Nuzhat was able to attend with her grandchildren. Maryum gave the young volunteers cookies from her business Made by Maryum as a sweet thank you.

CCMW Durham would like to thank Library staff Gail Canoncao, Jennifer Boon, and Jennifer Clark for their efforts to make this possible.  Thank you to the Durham Region chapter members for their volunteer work to make this event possible and to all the people who attended.
