May 10, 2020

Today there are mothers around the world who must be separated from their children so that they may save the lives of mothers of children not their own.

These mothers are doctors, nurses, allied health care workers, personal support workers, and others looking after patients inflicted with COVID-19. These mothers are missing their own children and are thinking about them constantly, trusting that they are well looked after by other family members or friends, while they fulfill their obligations outside their homes.

These mothers are missing their own children and are thinking about them constantly, trusting that they are well looked after by other family members or friends, while they fulfill their obligations outside their homes.

Mothers are always thinking about their children. They know when their children are in distress, when they are content and when they are in trouble. They can read their children’s faces, eyes, gestures, and inflections in every word and sentence. Even when their children say “I’m fine” mothers can tell just how fine their children are. Mothers’ souls are inseparable from their children’s.

This Mother’s Day, we will find ways to connect with our mothers, whether it’s through technology, or from the other side of the window at home, or a note or package left at the door or the tried and true telephone. There are many more mothers who will have no such opportunities because they do not have access to any of these privileges but they are thinking about their children and how to protect and comfort them.

We are forever grateful to our mothers for their unconditional love and always thinking about us, even when their own lives may be at risk.

This Mother’s Day, let us all celebrate and say a silent prayer for all our frontline and healthcare workers who have emerged as our ‘new mothers’ nurturing and nursing us back to life, hope, and care!

Happy Mother’s Day 2020!
