All Human, All Equal

The 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence as part of the UNiTE to End Violence campaign end today with the marking of International Human Rights Day.

Human Rights Day is observed on December 10 every year to commemorate the day in 1948 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

CCMW joins the global community in observing this year’s Human Rights Day theme, EQUALITY - Reducing inequalities, advancing human rights. The theme relates to 'Equality' and Article 1 of the UDHR – “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”

This includes addressing and finding solutions for deep-rooted forms of discrimination that have affected the most vulnerable people in societies, especially women and girls. Women around the world continue to experience discrimination in the enjoyment of civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights. Violence against women and girls is a global public health problem of pandemic proportions. One in three women experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. The fallout of the pandemic has disproportionately affected women and the number of female victims of homicide and violence has risen significantly around the world in the past two years. The spike corroborates a deadly trend that many anti-violence groups have warned about since the start of the pandemic.

Visible minority women are at a much higher risk of suffering from violence. Many Muslim and racialized women and girls also face compounded forms of discrimination, in addition to violence and gender-based discrimination. The pandemic has impacted these women the most - putting them at a higher risk of not only experiencing violence but also losing out on employment and educational opportunities.

Women and girls of the world want and deserve an equal future free from stigma, stereotypes and violence. A sustainable and peaceful future with equal rights and opportunities. Our work here at CCMW is centered around helping to achieve such a future.

CCMW is dedicated to fighting violence and discrimination against women and advocates for the empowerment, equality and equity of Canadian Muslim women. For 40 years, we have been working tirelessly to uphold the rights of Canada's Muslim women and girls and to promote their lived experiences through community engagement, public policy, stakeholder engagement and amplified awareness of the social injustices that they face.

On this International Human Rights Day, we ask you to contribute to this work by making a tax-deductible donation to CCMW.
