CCMW Shocked and Outraged after Hate-motivated Car Attack on Muslim family in London, Ontario
The Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) is shocked to hear the news of a Muslim family in London, Ontario struck and killed by a vehicle yesterday evening.
The family of five was out for a walk in London’s north end when a pickup truck occupied by a single male struck them as they waited to cross the intersection.
Four members of the family died from their injuries: a 74 year-old woman, a 46-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, and a 15-year-old girl. A nine-year-old boy is the sole survivor and remains in hospital with serious injuries.
A 20-year-old man was charged earlier today and there is evidence that this was a planned, pre-meditated act motivated by hate. Police believe that the victims were targeted because of their Muslim faith.
This was an act of mass murder perpetrated against Muslims rooted in unspeakable hatred. Hate and Islamophobia have no place in Ontario and justice must be served for this horrific crime. These heinous acts of violence against Muslims across Canada must stop. We must all commit to confronting Islamophobia in all its forms and eradicating hate crimes.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends during this difficult time. CCMW extends its condolences to the families mourning and praying for the surviving child, to the Muslim community in London, Ontario and to everyone who continues to fight acts of hate in our country.
