Praying for the Children of Gaza
On this Universal Children's Day, the Canadian Council of Muslim Women mourns the lost lives of innocent children who have been murdered brutally by the indiscriminate Israeli bombardment of Gaza. We pray for these children who have been enduring unimaginable hardships and trauma that will leave lasting mental, emotional and physical scars on them for the rest of their lives if they survive.
Today is a day to reflect upon the rights of every child to a safe, secure, and nurturing environment, regardless of their geographical location.
"The child, for the full and harmonious development of his or her personality, should grow up in a family environment, in an atmosphere of happiness, love, and understanding." This quote from the preamble to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child serves as a poignant reminder that Palestinian children deserve the same dignity and protection as every child in the world but many of them are separated from their families and no one knows when they will be reunited.
The children of Gaza are facing the harsh realities of genocidal indignities, witnessing the destruction of their homes, schools, families, and communities. According to reports from Al-Jazeera, since October 7, Israeli attacks have killed at least 5,600 children. One Palestinian child is killed every 10 minutes. 9,000 children are injured and 1,800 are trapped under the rubble.
History will judge us harshly for not doing everything in our power to stop the killing. The UN has called Gaza a “graveyard for children.” How is it possible that in 2023, premature babies are being removed from incubators and barely survive? As an organization committed to promoting justice, equality, and compassion, we call upon the international community and the Canadian government to call for an immediate ceasefire and stop the killing.
All children are precious, whether Palestinian or Israeli. Let us remember them today and pray for their safety and the comfort of their families.
