Canada’s Premier Muslim Women’s Organization Turns 40
Toronto, ON, September 8, 2022 - The Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) is celebrating 40 years of equality, equity and empowerment of Canadian Muslim Women. To celebrate this milestone, supporters and members from across Canada will be gathering in-person and virtually on Saturday, September 10th.
CCMW was founded in 1982, when a group of dynamic and determined Muslim women led by the late Dr. Lila Fahlman, came together in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to claim their space and identities. These women were passionate about bringing equality, equity and empowerment to Canadian Muslim women and girls and sought to mobilize their passion for social justice and faith to enrich their communities and work towards the common good of Canadian society. 40 years later, CCMW is proud of its 40-year legacy. It is a grassroots organization with members across the country. It is more than an organization – it is a family, a movement for the empowerment and celebration of all Canadian Muslim women.
“I’m so proud to be a part of this organization…it has filled my life with purpose and meaning, and a compass, and a framework to be a Canadian Muslim woman. Saturday will be a celebration for past and future generations of Muslim women leaders”, said CCMW Board President, Nina Karachi-Khaled.
Saturday’s celebration will be filled with reminiscent thoughts, insightful words, and amazing performances. We will be joined by our trailblazers, Alia Hogben and Talat Muinnudin, and Professor Lynda Clarke, a scholar who has participated actively in our work. Topping off the evening will be performances by poets Rahat Kurd and Hana Shafi, and musicians Tara Moneka and Audrey Saparno.
At the event, CCMW will launch a multilingual education campaign to end Gender-Based Violence (GBV) through a social media campaign titled, End GBV, Heal Together. Campaign materials will be available in Arabic, Bangla, English, Farsi, French, Pashto, Somali and Urdu. It is a part of a project to address barriers for Muslim women and girls facing GBV and provide them with service coordination.
We are looking forward to celebrating 40 years of CCMW with members, friends, and family. Tickets for virtual attendance are available here.
