Commemorating National Indigenous Peoples Day

The Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) joins the nation in commemorating the National Day of Indigenous Peoples. On this significant day, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities across Canada and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

As an organization committed to social justice, equality, and diversity, CCMW recognizes the historical injustices endured by Indigenous peoples, including forced assimilation, systemic discrimination, and the lasting impacts of colonial policies. We acknowledge that the journey towards reconciliation requires collective effort, empathy, and respect for Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination.

Reconciliation is a journey that requires collective action and a commitment to justice. CCMW reaffirms its dedication to the process of reconciliation and acknowledges the urgent need to address the exploitation of Indigenous lands. We recognize that the fight for justice extends beyond words and necessitates concrete actions to rectify historical wrongs and create a more equitable society.

In particular, CCMW is deeply concerned about the ongoing injustices faced by Indigenous women and girls. We are committed to seeking truth and justice for them, standing against gender-based violence, and advocating for their rights and safety. It is essential that we actively address the systemic barriers and violence that disproportionately impact Indigenous women and girls, ensuring their voices are heard and their experiences are centered in all discussions on reconciliation.

We urge you to join us in this fight for justice and reconciliation. Today, we encourage you to write to all levels of government, urging them to take immediate and meaningful action to support Indigenous communities. It is vital that we hold our elected officials accountable and demand justice, equity, and respect for the rights and sovereignty of Indigenous Peoples.

Additionally, here are some other ways you can help not only on this National Day of Indigenous Peoples but every day:

  1. Educate Yourself: Learn about the rich histories, cultures, and ongoing struggles of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Seek out authentic Indigenous voices and resources to deepen your understanding.

  2. Support Indigenous-Owned Businesses: Purchase goods and services from Indigenous-owned businesses to help empower and uplift Indigenous economies.

  3. Engage in Meaningful Dialogue: Foster conversations with your friends, family, and colleagues about the importance of reconciliation and the rights of Indigenous Peoples. Listen to and amplify Indigenous voices in these discussions.

  4. Volunteer and Support Indigenous Organizations: Offer your time, skills, and resources to support local Indigenous organizations working towards empowerment, cultural preservation, and community development.

  5. Respect Indigenous Land and Treaties: Acknowledge and honor the traditional territories and treaties of Indigenous Peoples. Practice responsible stewardship of the land and advocate for sustainable practices.

In Solidarity.
