Alia Youssef: 2018

Alia Youssef is a Vancouver and Toronto based photographer whose work complicates representations of Muslim women and showcases their diverse narratives. Alia spearheaded The Sisters Project, a photography series that celebrates and shares the stories of Muslim women from across Canada.  For the series, Alia photographed and interviewed over 160 women from 12 cities and 8 provinces – combatting the one-dimensional image and stereotypes imposed on Muslim women and creating a space for connection and sisterhood within the community and outside of it. Recently, Alia created the another project with similar goals, Generations, which shares the intergenerational stories and histories of 30 Muslim families across Canada through multigenerational family portraits.
