Host: Zahra Grant
Zahra Grant is a first generation Muslim woman born and raised in Toronto by her father, who reverted to Islam after immigrating to Canada from Trinidad in the late with 1970s. Zahra believes in an Islam rooted in liberation and justice, especially as it pertains to woman. She has worked and collaborated on multiple initiatives of social activism engagement, including previous work with the Canadian Council of Muslim Woman on the project ‘Being a Canadian Muslim Woman in the 21st Century.
Speaker: Hannan Mohamud
Hannan Mohamud is a 2L law student at the English Common law faculty. Prior to joining the faculty, Hannan is an award-winning policy and legal researcher with a successful track record in citizen engagement and mobilization. As an undergraduate student at the University of Alberta 2019, Hannan studied a dual BA in Psychology and Sociology; her research explored the importance of understanding the impacts of historical and contemporary oppression and trauma on policy development and decision-making.
Hannan has advised political parties, consulted organizations and writes about the need for an intersectional and critical race analysis on a freelance basis. Currently, Hannan works with the Canadian human rights commissioner’s office and as an independent researcher for grants she has successfully received to conduct legislation revision. Hannan has been elected by her peers to be a board member on the University of Ottawa’s board of governors and has recently also joined the Canadian Council of Muslim Women’s board of directors.
Speaker: Warda Mohamed
Introducing the creative genius behind many of Hidaayah Houses’ initiatives, Warda Mohamed! Warda has a deep rooted passion in supporting people when they need it most, and she does so in a way that uplifts and connects people in ways never seen before! An entrepreneur and leader in her own right, she keeps the spirit of Hidaayah House going with regular reminders that this work should be filled with love and joy.
From Instagram to Tiktok to real life, many who have come across Warda have testified to the infectious energy she brings everywhere she goes. Henna Artist, Host Extraordinaire, Event Planner, and more, Warda wears many hats and wears them well.
Speaker: Ayan Bashir
Ayan Bashir is a Somali-Canadian Visual Artist based in Toronto, ON. For the past 7 years; Ayan has explored digital art, henna, calligraphy & fused them into her Graphic Design projects. As a Black Muslim Woman, Ayan navigates the art scene to truly make an impact in her community with her whimsical yet vibrant style. Ayan's recent projects have been online and remote; She facilitates Art Workshops with a curriculum geared to the audience, creates digital illustrations for local NGO’s in regards to natural henna & most recently Branding small businesses in regards to logos, social highlights, websites etc.. Ayan always had a passion to create with her hands. She is not afraid of taking risks & enjoys thinking outside of the box to really bring the passion project to life!
