Scholarship in Honour of Dr. Lila Fahlman, Founder of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women

The Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) is now accepting applications for the Dr. Lila Fahlman Scholarship for the 2007-2008 academic year.

The scholarship was launched at CCMW’s fall conference in Ottawa to honour Dr. Lila Fahlman, educator, philanthropist and the founder of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women. Dr. Fahlman, who dedicated her life to public service, was a trailblazer for Muslim women in civic life. In 1971, she ran for public office on the New Democratic Party ticket in a federal election. Soon after completing her doctorate in educational psychology in the 1980s, Dr. Fahlman was elected to the Edmonton Public School Board, the first Muslim woman to sit on a school board in Canada.

She founded CCMW in 1982. To mark the 25th anniversary of the Council, a scholarship will be awarded to a Muslim woman student who is enrolled in a full-time degree (graduate or undergraduate), diploma or certificate program at a Canadian college or university for the academic year commencing September 2007. Preference will be given to those students enrolled in social science, education, or communication programs. The scholarship will be awarded to a successful applicant from this year onwards.

Deadline for applications is July 31, 2007. Eligibility criteria and application requirements are attached. For more information or to contribute to the scholarship fund please email us at info@ccmw.com
