Letter to Prime Minister About Rohingya
The Right Honourable Justin Trudeau
Prime Minister of Canada
80 Wellington Street
Ottawa, ON K1A 0A2
September 11/2017.
Dear Prime Minister,
We have waited these last few months hoping that Myanmar would stop the genocide of its own people. Instead of ameliorating the tragic situation, the government seems to be an active party in this ethnic cleansing of thousands of men, women and children.
We support the recommendations of Alan Rock and Lloyd Axworthy that Canada has a vital role in resolving the suffering of these people. In the 1990s, at the U.N, Canada took the lead by creating a coalition of countries when Bosnian Muslims were being massacred and our actions led to the halting of the killings. This can be done again by Canada at the U.N. and we hope that you will instruct our delegation in New York to act quickly and decisively to save human lives.
The other actions which can be taken are to revoke Aung San Suu Kyi’s Canadian citizenship. This honour was bestowed on her when she demonstrated her defence of human rights, and surely her actions now are unworthy of any Canadian leader. We also urge you to request that her Nobel Prize be rescinded. Even if Sweden does not follow through, at least Canada will have shown its integrity and respect of the values of human rights for all.
Since becoming Prime Minister, you have demonstrated admirable positions based on solid values and we ask you to please show the world that we care for the Rohingyas as much as we care for the Syrian refugees.
Please let us know what your government will do.
Thankyou,
Alia Hogben
Executive Director
