Hate Motivated Attacks Against Muslim Women in Edmonton

Stop Hate Now

Friday, December 11, 2020

The Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) is shocked at yet another hate crime perpetrated against Muslims in Canada.

According to media reports, on Tuesday, December 8, in broad daylight a man approached two Black women wearing hijabs who were sitting in their car in the parking lot of Southgate Centre in Edmonton and began yelling racially motivated obscenities at them.

Sitting in their car the women must have surely felt safe but the perpetrator smashed the window of their vehicle and continued to attack and assault the women when one of them ran for safety and the other tried to help.

The incident has left the Edmonton and all Muslim communities shaken. We’re heartened to learn that the Edmonton Police has laid a hate charge against the attacker.

We urge public safety agencies and governments to take action to stem the tide of racially motivated hate crimes.  Education and diversity and inclusion programs are not enough, legislation and regulations to control the growth and activities of white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups in Canada is an imperative.

We stand in solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters and pray for the health and well-being of the two women who were subjected to this assault.

Sincerely,

CCMW
